  • I refuse to enter a room (hallway) when it is not properly lit.
  • Proper construction lighting is missing at this project.

There is little daylight during autumn; it stays dark longer in the morning and dusk comes early.
Without light at the construction site there is insufficient visibility and this can create unsafe situations. Failure to see a small hole or a tripping hazard can have major consequences, especially when it is still dark. It is therefore very important for the workplace to be properly lit. It is also important for people to carry lighting suitable for walking on the site. This enables them to properly see their surroundings and it also makes people visible to others. Everyone needs to be aware of the fact that on darker days people are not as easily and quickly seen.

Lighting on the construction site, such as workplaces and walking routes, is necessary at this time of the year. Equipment must also be illuminated.

There are different kinds of lighting:

  • Site lighting
    Site lighting is used at works in progress or along motorways. So as to avoid blinding traffic, it is recommended that you maintain a height of 8 to 10 metres.
  • Lighting in confined spaces
    Construction lighting must be connected to a safety transformer of a maximum of 50V AC or a maximum of 120V DC.
  • Orientation lighting
    These construction lights often are installed within easy reach and must be Class-II or III lighting. They are used in the following situations:
    - In the construction of buildings with long hallways;
    - In dark passageways;
    - In shafts;
    - In stairwells.
  • Sustainable lighting
    LED lighting is the most sustainable form of lighting. It consumes less energy than other types of lighting and has a longer service life.
Risks > What can happen?

Working in an improperly lit environment or room carries risks, such as:

  • Bumping into objects that are not clearly visible;
  • Tripping and falling;
  • Losing one’s way;
  • Panicking.

Moreover, there also are physical risks:

  • Fatigue/excessive fatigue;
  • Working less precisely (chance of bodily injury);
  • Headache;
  • Burning eyes.
Measures > What you must do
  • Affix the construction lights to a support;
  • Position the lights in such a way that they do not blind anyone in your surroundings;
  • Position the temporary lighting along motorways at a height of 8 to 10 metres (if possible in the central reserve);
  • Inspect the construction lighting to ensure it is in good condition and is certified;
  • Place the construction light at a sufficient distance from combustible materials;
  • In crawling spaces, connect the lights to a safety transformer.
