 >  Working by the roadside
Discussion > Talk about it with your colleagues!
  • I know the rules with regard to traffic barriers
  • I regularly check the barriers
Introduction

In this toolbox meeting, we will focus on working safely by the roadside.

Roadworks involve certain risks, such as the risk of a collision. These risks not only affect motorised traffic, but cyclists and pedestrians too. Often, works traffic will need to cross a cycle path. Take extra care when you do so, as cyclists are vulnerable road users.

Risks > What could happen?
  • collision risk (road users and road workers)
  • noise
  • poor visibility
Measures > What do you need to do?
  • Place the correct road barriers as shown on the work drawing (traffic cones, barriers, delineators)
  • The distance between the side barriers and the work site must be at least 60 cm
  • Make sure your vehicle is fitted with a 'WERKVERKEER' [HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE'] sign and that your hazard lights/beacon and the reversing signal (acoustic or other) are working
  • Direct traffic where necessary (use LMRA to decide if this is the case)
  • Wear the mandatory PPE
  • Make sure that the measures taken never contravene the traffic signs and road markings on the site. Cover these if necessary.
  • Make sure that the barrier material is in good condition.
  • While working, make sure that the barriers are maintained properly and on a regular basis
  • If cones, delineators or signs are moved to let vehicles pass, make sure to put them back in their original place afterwards.
  • Every time you start work, check whether the barriers are still positioned correctly, and perform another check at the end of the day.
  • If possible, mark out a safety zone on your work site. Keep this free from equipment and parked vehicles. Many roadworks will have a safety zone on both sides of the work. See the example below.
Tips > More information

Working by the roadside is and will always be a high-risk activity. By keeping to the rules and by observing the instructions of the supervisor, we can work more safely together!
