 >  The 'works traffic' sign
Discussion > Talk with your colleagues about it!
  • I regularly check whether my 'werkverkeer' ['works traffic'] sign is clean.

  • You always need dispensation under the Dutch Highway Code (RVV) to be allowed to use the 'works traffic' sign.
Introduction

In this toolbox meeting, we will be discussing the 'werkverkeer' ['works traffic'] sign. Most of the time, you'll be on the road as a regular road user, but your vehicle can also be used as a works vehicle. While working with your vehicle, you will regularly need to perform special manoeuvres in traffic, such as standing still by the roadside or partially on the road/cycle path/pavement, or entering/exiting a work site.

Measures > What must you do?

The purpose of the 'works traffic' sign is to warn other road users (or make them aware) that you may be performing special manoeuvres.

When to use the sign

The sign must be affixed to means of transport that road users would not be able to recognise as a works vehicle. This includes:

  • lorries
  • vans
  • trailers
  • passenger cars

Requirements

The 'works traffic' sign must comply with the requirements in the 'Specifications for equipment and materials' publication in the 'Work in progress 96a/96b' series by CROW.

The sign must be affixed to the works vehicle in a place that is clearly visible to road users. The sign must be:

  • positioned horizontally and in the centre of a vertical plane on the rear of the vehicle

  • affixed at the right height (between 1 and 2 m above the road)

  • large enough (appropriate for the vehicle)

  • firmly affixed

  • in good condition (clean, free from damage, with the 'werkverkeer' ['works traffic'] letters clearly recognisable).

Tips > For more information

If your sign is damaged or the letters are not clearly legible, let your supervisor know. They will make sure you get a replacement 'works traffic' sign that meets the applicable regulations.

Make sure to check your sign on a regular basis, and speak to your colleagues if their signs are damaged!

Make other road users aware of your presence!
