During this toolbox meeting we will discuss working safely alongside the road (motorway).

Working safely alongside the road (motorway)

Roadwork causes a disruption to the road environment. It does not only disrupt the traffic flow, but also the expectations of road users. This entails certain risks, for instance, the danger of a collision. Not only motorised traffic is affected by roadwork, but also cyclists and pedestrians. Quite frequently, construction traffic crosses a bicycle path. Pay extra attention if this is the case, because a cyclist is a vulnerable traffic participant.

• Collide with (road user, road worker)
• Noise;
• Low visibility

Control measures:

• Place the correct road barriers as indicated in the work drawing (cones, barriers, beacons). The distance between the road barrier and the work station needs to be at least 60 cm.
• Make sure your car/lorry is fitted with a ‘WERKVERKEER’ sign and that the alarm lights / rotating light and (acoustic) backup warning system is functioning.
• Directing traffic where needed (use LMRA to decide if this is necessary).
• Wear the mandatory PPE (safety footwear, helmet, safety tabard (with visible Roman II), long reflective safety trousers (only mandatory at night).
• Backup warning system and backup cameras are mandatory on lorries.
• Carry out regular inspection rounds.
• Ensure that the measures taken are never in conflict with the on-site traffic signs and road markings. If necessary, cover these with a cloth or a sack.
• Make sure that the barrier material is in good condition.
• During work, ensure the barriers are maintained well and on a regular basis. If cones, beacons or signs are moved to let vehicles pass through, make sure to put them back in their original place afterwards.
• Each time you start to work, check if the barriers are still properly lined up. Do not park cars or work busses on bicycle paths.
• If possible, mark out a transport conveyer in your work station. Keep it free of materials and parked cars.

Safety awareness:

The measures are merely means to increase safety alongside the road. But you can also play a large part in working safely alongside the road.

• Be aware of the risks
• See to your own safety
• See to the safety of your colleagues
• Rectify unsafe behaviour of others, doing nothing is allowing unsafe behaviour.
• Be clear and act calmly towards road users and remain professional.

Working alongside roads is and will always remain risky business. By following to the rules and instructions of your line manager, we can make it safer together!
